From Stable to Home, Lewisham

This project reimagines a former rear stable building as a compact one-bedroom dwelling within the Perry Fields Conservation Area in South East London.
The initial concept design for the conversion was prepared by Gemma Wheeler Architecture. SEAM Architects were later appointed by the Client to develop the scheme further, refining the design and preparing the proposal through to planning submission.
The design carefully retains the original brick stable while introducing a contemporary metal-clad extension and mansard dormer. New interventions are deliberately subservient to the historic structure, allowing the character of the original building to remain the focus.
Slimline aluminium glazing, restored brickwork and carefully detailed boundaries help integrate the new home into the surrounding streetscape while delivering modern living standards.
A small footprint, thoughtful design and a sensitive approach to heritage — proving that even overlooked buildings can become high-quality homes.
